Side gardens are measured from the side of the house to the boundary. Set any of them to 0 to leave it out. Everything can be reshaped afterwards, for example a side garden that widens towards the back.

It's placed beside your existing gardens. Select it and drag to move it into place.
Walk round the boundary with a tape. For each side, enter its length and how far you turn at the next corner: 90 for a right-angle turn to the right, −90 to the left. The last side back to the start is worked out for you.
